May 2009 Board Recognitions ![]() The May Students of the Month are Nissa Lee Mills and Gregory Kyle Cordes.
May Female Student of the Month Nissa is very active in numerous FHS organizations. As a member of Link Crew, Nissa serves as a peer mentor for incoming freshmen, assisting them in making a smooth transition into high school. She was chosen as the Link Crew student of the month and the organization in the Principal’s Roundtable. Nissa represented the Family Community Career Leaders of America in the annual Peanut Festival this past October. In addition, she is a former member of the FHS Chapter of the Red Cross. She was a member of the Mighty Tiger Band for three years. For her efforts in the classroom, Nissa has earned recognition. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Last year, she earned the Outstanding Student of the Year Award for US History. In 2005-2006, Nissa played volleyball and basketball with the local Boys & Girl’s Club. She played again the following year, but added the responsibility of coaching teams for both sports. Despite her busy schedule, Nissa has found time to give back to her community. Through the FHS VAL-U Class, Nissa has particpated in an H-E-B bag recycling effort and a Nike Shoe Recycling project. Upon graduation in June, Nissa plans to attend Augusta Technical College, where she will purse a degree in Nursing. The May Male Student of the Month is Gregory Kyle Cordes. Gregory is the seventeen-year-old son of Rosa and Greg Cordes. Gregory has excelled in the classroom. He is a member of the National Honor Society and was named to the A Honor Roll last year. The previous two years, he earned recognition for the A-B Honor Roll. Gregory is very active in extracurricular activities at FHS and in the community. He is a member of the Student Council, where he is a representative for the Business Professionals of America. He is active in the Eagle Creek 4-H club and served as that organization’s President. He is also a council delegate for the Labatt 4-H Club. Gregory serves as President of the District 10 Entomology Committee for 4-H. He has participated in the Entomology and Food Quiz Bowl, earning recognition as 1st Place High Point Individual and 1st Place Team at the state entomology competition. Gregory also placed 3rd at the State Food and Nutrition Quiz Bowl. In addition, Gregory also participated in the V.A.S.E. art competition, earning a 4 out of 4 rating for his drawing. When not busy with academic and extracurricular demands, Gregory is volunteering in the community. He has participated in Adopt-A-Highway projects, and as a member of the FHS VAL-U Class, he particpated in Operation Save the World. Upon graduation in June, Gregory plans to the University of Texas, where he will major in pharmacy.
