Texas Supercyclist Program During the second 6 weeks of school, Sept. 29-Nov. 7, 2003, all 3rd graders will have the opportunity to participate in the Texas SuperCyclist program at FES. The curriculum for this program was developed in response to State legislation, which was passed in 1993. This curriculum is designed to meet Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) criteria and also provide cross curriculum materials. All 3rd grade students will be taught the curriculum in their PE class. Students will learn the 7 bicycle laws along with the importance of wearing a helmet when they ride. They will be given a demonstration on proper bike care and performance of routine maintenance checks. Role-playing and problem solving wil be used to determine the safety of certain situations. Along with all of this, many new vocabulary words will be introduced. The last activity for the 6 weeks will be the Skills Course, which is designed to allow students to get comfortable on their bikes. Students do not have to participate in the two Courses but are encouraged to do so. The skills needed for this course are starting, controlling turns, controlling their bike straight ahead, signaling right and left turns, and stopping. Once the student is able to complete this course, they will be allowed to go on to the next course, the Road Course. Skills needed to successfully complete this course include entering traffic, right and left turns, stopping at traffic controls, avoiding an obstruction, and yielding to cross traffic . Both of these courses are painted on the Elementary playground area and students will not be on the open roads. Please contact the P.E. department for a permission form, if you do not have one. The form must be returned by Oct. 27th, 2003, in order for your child to participate.
