The Adventure of the Opal Ring

“Ow! Ow! Ow!” I thought, as I was wedged on someone’s finger. I was a ring that was a Kenemore family heirloom.  I have the fate of being wedged on their fingers. You have no idea what it feels like. It feels like you’re going to burst.

I like it here in the jewelry box. I have a friend that is a deep red ruby. Her name is Ruby and I met her in the jewelry box. The way she got here is that Muriel’s daughter Zoe found her on a jewelry rack. Zoe is the nicest of the ten sisters. Sometimes they tease her, but she ignores them. She doesn’t that I know that her crush likes her, but I can’t talk……or can I?

Well, I will answer that for you. I can talk, but I don’t talk in front of humans. I mean, I do love Zoe but I don’t want to freak her out, so today I talked to Ruby about it and she said, “Well, you never know till you try.”

“Well yah! That’s what you always say,” said Opal.

he‘s been saying since she got me to ask the guy she likes if he likes her, and of course the answer was yes. She doesn’t know that all the guys like her.

I finally said, while Zoe was in the room, “Hey, Zoe it’s Opal, the opal ring.”

“I always knew that when you were alone you started talking,” she said in a matter-of-fact-way.

“So you aren’t freaked out that I can talk?”

“Why, no I’m not. Can the deep red ruby talk?”

“Yes and she doesn’t restrain herself from talking.”

“She has a boyfriend but she doesn’t know that all the guys like her.”

Zoë laughed again. “That is very funny.” she said.

That day she and I talked our heads off until her mom noticed. “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh,” Zoe said.

“Zoe Kenemore! What are you doing?”

“Nothing, mom.”

“Then come and help me with dinner.”

“OK,” she said.  That’s when “it” happened. The dog came over to her bed and started to play with me!  Ok so I was stuck in a bad position but I was staying cool…….or was I?

No!!!!!!!!! Man, was I scared. I was stuck in a dog’s paw. I had no idea what was going to happen.  This was the first time I had ever been in a problem like THIS.

The dog picked me up and carried me to his bed behind the living room chair. I fell asleep and woke with a start. The dog and the cat were fighting again. I said, “Stop! Stop! Stop! What are you fighting over?”

“You,” They screamed. Flea was the cat and Bufie was the dog. What I said was, “Flea! Bufie! Bufie found me, so if you want me, you have to trade.” They traded food. I asked Flea if she would take me back to the bed and she said “No!” I was taken to the back yard and left there.

Now I was stuck. I said, “Way to go, Opal.” I was stuck there all night when I would rather be with Zoe. I kept yelling but no one heard me. I felt lame and bad because I was never going to be found and I had become friends with Zoe. I started crying when the cat asked, “Why are you crying? I thought you liked it out here.”

“I’m… snuff---snuff…not happy out here. Snuff-Snuff-Snuff.”

We started to talk and she agreed to take me back in the morning. I went to sleep with the cat at my side. That night I slept fitfully and only woke when I noticed that I was moving.  I said, “Why are we moving?”

“It’s after noon, silly. I’m taking you to Zoe. It is what you wanted, right?”

“Yes,” I added hastily. I saw Zoe and told the cat to follow her. I yelled and she turned around and saw me. She said.

“I have been worried sick. What happened?” I told her everything and she gasped and applauded in all the right places. I never knew anyone who was so under sitting {because she was sitting down} as her.

We went inside and she was so happy to see me, she and I talked all day. I went back and saw Rose and started telling her everything that had happened. She was just the same as Zoe. Her expression was pure gold. I went to sleep, but before I was asleep I said good night to Rose and Zoe. Years later I was going to have the same thing happen to me again.
