Floresville Family:

You might or might not know that our high school has their own “Lion’s Club.” Being a Lion, I am proud to say that this club, called the “Leo’s Club” is an outstanding example of service to the community. These young people are currently organizing a breast cancer awareness festival “Helping to Find a Cure!” to take place on April 25 2009 at the Floresville City Park.

These students have taken it upon themselves to organize this event.  This event will include a blood mobile from San Antonio Blood and Tissue Center, a portable mammography machine, and bone marrow screening station.  There will also be games, music, food, a dance, raffles and an auction.

They came up with this idea, did the research and found that they would need $1900 just to cover their expenses.  They started working towards their goal by asking for sponsor and donations from the local community as well as doing bake sales and yard sales.  While they are still working on fund raising they have met their first goal of $1900 to cover the cost of the festival, now they are working to raise money for a donation to the Breast Cancer Foundation to help purchase wigs, hats and scarves for breast cancer patients.  Also they are looking for people to participate in the blood drive, take advantage of the free mammogram and bone marrow screening.

In the past year these student have also organized a care package drive for a Marine Unit in Fuluja Iraq, and cleaning of a section of Hwy 181 just north of Floresville that they have adopted.

We are truly blessed to have such wonderful kids helping to create a community of character in Floresville!  Thank you Leo’s and parent sponsor Glen Mabe for his wonderful leadership efforts.  The photo is the current Leo’s Club Officers, from left to right:  Christopher Mabe – Vice President, Daniela Aguillon – Secretary, Britney Fletcher – President, Madison Tabor – Treasurer, Levi Campos – PAO.

You can also help the community with the purchase of a 7.00 ticket for the chicken meals we plan to serve this Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can buy tickets at the door or purchase them from me.

Sincerely,
