Real Slideshow Project

Text Box: Real Slideshow: 100 Days of School

Poems were from the following book:
         Franco, Betsy (2004). Counting Our Way to the 100th Day!
New York, NY: Scholastic Inc.

This slide show is a depiction of projects and a couple of activities that my first grade students did on the 100th day of school.

Students spent the day with activities surrounding the number 100, including piecing together 100 piece puzzles, making a snack with 100 ingredients, listening to books such as Alexander Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday and writing about what they would do if they had 100 dollars. Math activities included counting 100 objects, then putting them in groups of 5’s, 10’s, and 20’s. We measured length and weight and compared the items to the other students. I couldn't include pictures of students doing the math activities because I did not have permission to put their pictures on the internet. This is something I will work on before doing a project again.

Many TEKS are covered on this day including:

§110.3. English Language Arts and Reading, Grade 1.

(18) Writing/purposes. The student writes for a variety of audiences and purposes and in a variety of forms. The student is expected to:

(C) write to record ideas and reflections (K-3);

(D) write to discover, develop, and refine ideas (1-3);

(E) write to communicate with a variety of audiences (1-3);

(19) Writing/writing processes. The student selects and uses writing processes to compose original text. The student is expected to:

(A) generate ideas before writing on self-selected topics (K-1);

(B) generate ideas before writing on assigned tasks (K-1);

(C) develop drafts (1-3);

(D) revise selected drafts for varied purposes, including to achieve a sense of audience, precise word choices, and vivid images (1-3); and

(E) use available technology to compose text (K-3).

(20) Writing/spelling. The student spells proficiently. The student is expected to:

(A) write with more proficient spelling of regularly spelled patterns such as consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) (hop), consonant-vowel-consonant-silent e (CVCe) (hope), and one-syllable words with blends (drop) (1-3);

(21) Writing/grammar/usage. The student composes meaningful texts by applying knowledge of grammar and usage. The student is expected to:

(A) use nouns and verbs in sentences (1); and

(B) compose complete sentences in written texts and use the appropriate end punctuation (1-2).

For this particular project, I would use the slides as a springboard to writing with first graders. A check list might be as follows:

Sentences are complete thoughts.
Sentences use correct punctuation and capitalization.
Words are spelled phonetically or book-spelled.
Sentences stay on topic.
Writing is legible and easy to read.

If I wanted to do a slide show for parents, we would take lots of pictures of the activities and projects and I would have the children narrate something about each slide. I think this would be great for an open house.
