Student Activity

After studying shapes and their attributes in class, students would be divided into groups. Each group would be given a digital camera and instructed on its use. Then students would explore their environment, inside and outside, to see what shapes they could find.  Each group would take no more than five pictures of circles, rectangles, squares, triangles, balls, boxes, cones, and cans. If they could not find at least three pictures of a particular shape, they could supplement with pictures from clip art.

Students would then download the pictures to the computer with the teacher’s assistance and work in their group to produce a PowerPoint presentation of the shapes in their environment, with assistance from the teacher as needed. The presentation must identify the attributes of each shape as well as have good pictorial representations. Each group would present their presentation; identify the shapes, their attributes, and examples. Students would also be responsible to answer any questions other students may have about their presentation.
