Counseling and Guidance
Counselors are professionally trained and TEA certified to
assist students with a variety of services in collaboration with classroom
teachers.
Orientation – registration and selection of classes
for new students and in the spring for currently enrolled.
Educational Guidance – assisting in post secondary
guidance for trade schools, colleges, and universities.
Career / Vocational Guidance – information
concerning careers and needed courses while at FHS.
Personal Counseling – provide services for students
experiencing problems in their relationships with peers, teachers, or their
parents. Information obtained in a counseling session is kept confidential in
accordance with counseling code of ethics. If a counselor learns of a situation
in which a student is likely to harm oneself or another then the counselor must
report the condition to appropriate authorities as wanted by law.
Other areas in which counselors assist
include:
504 – Eligibility (1)(a) has a physical or mental impairment which
substantially limits one or more major life activities, (b) has a record of such
impairment, or (c)) is regarded as having such an impairment; (2) substantial
limitations in which (a) unable to perform a major life activity or
significantly restricted as to the condition, manner or duration under which an
individual can perform a particular major life activity as that the average
person in the general population can perform (First, is there a physical or
mental impairment? Second, does that physical or mental impairment substantially
limit one or more major life activities?) FHS can provide monitoring of progress
and accommodations for school and academics.
Choices – a credit recovery program in which to assist students in
graduation by an alternative means.
English Language Learners – students are provided
services in which teachers are trained in Sheltered Instruction to better
provide strategies to assist in the development of mastering a second language.
Gateway – an alternative educational program in which students are given
the opportunity through a community college to earn both a high school diploma
and college credits simultaneously.
Gifted and talented -
The purpose of the
Floresville ISD Gifted and Talented Program is to provide services specifically
designed for gifted students to demonstrate skills in self-directed learning,
thinking, research, and communications as evidenced by the development of
innovative products and performances. These products and performances are
advanced in relation to students of similar age, experience, or environment, and
reflect individuality and creativity. See
http://www.fisd.us/SpecialPrograms/GTPlan.htm
for more details.
Link Crew - a nationally known 9th grade transition
program. 11th and 12th graders have the opportunity to apply to become mentors.
Nova Net - a credit recovery program in which
students have the opportunity to regain credits lost.
Pregnancy Related Services – If you think you might
be pregnant, please see your counselor or school nurse. Through PRS, students
are able to continue school until due and then once the baby is born a
home-bound teacher can be assigned. Homebound services allow students to
continue their education and receive credit with a teacher facilitating the
assignments and learning without loss of school attendance. Homebound services
generally last 6 weeks after delivery or until doctor releases student.
Special Education – services are provided for
students with a disability.
FISD offers a continuum
of placements. ARD committee placements are based on individual student needs.
After the IEP objectives are developed, the ARD committee must determine the
educational setting or placement where the special education and related
services will be provided. Your child must be educated in the least restrictive
environment (LRE). This means your child must be places in the educational
setting that provides the most opportunities to be educated with students who do
not have disabilities. See
http://www.fisd.us/specialeducation/default.htm for more details.
Students At Risk – students at risk of not
graduation within four years of starting 9th grade are identified
using thirteen criteria. Examples of the criteria are: not passing a section of
the TAKS test, not advancing a grade level, by failing two or more core subject
areas completing monitored. For more details please see counselors. Students
are then monitored and given strategies in which to motivate success.
