Class News...
For the 4th nine weeks, Reading Logs will be due on the following Mondays... April 14th, April 20th, May 4th, and May 11th. Please make sure to follow directions on filling out the Reading Logs. Several students have been "adding minutes" after their parent/guardian has already signed for the week.
Also, this nine weeks period, students will be required to take ONE AR tests at their level. They have from March 30th - May 8th to do this. Please encourage your child to read at home as well as to have a book with them in class every day.
For the last nine weeks, we will also be reading a class novel. My 6th graders are reading Sign of the Beaver which is about a boy left alone at his cabin in the late 1700's. He has to learn how to survive on his own, but ends up getting some help from the Beaver Indian tribe that resides in that area of the New England States. My 7th graders are reading Where the Red Fern Grows which is about a boy who displays real character and determination in his desire to own two hunting hounds, and how the bond develops between the boy and his two dogs. With these novels, students will be completing an "at home" project that will be due on May 13th. They will also be watching the movie that goes with the novel and it is rated PG. Permission/information slips were sent home on March 25, 2009 explaining the novel and project expectations.
Just in case you have lost the information letter, there is a copy of it below...
Thank you for your continued support!
Dear Parents, March 24, 2009
We will be starting our class novel, _______________________________, this week. We will not be sending copies of the novel home with your child to read because the reading will be done in class. In addition to keeping up with chapters read each week, students will also be given vocabulary words that they will need to know for chapter quizzes and assignments. All students will also be required to complete a novel project. They will be given a list of projects and will be allowed to choose which one they’d like to do by the assigned due date. The novel will take approximately 7 to 9 weeks to complete, including assignments, activities, and projects. We would also like to show a movie based on the novel so that the students can compare and contrast media and written text. The movie is rated PG and we must have the bottom portion of this letter returned as soon as possible so that we know who will be able to watch the movie as well as to document the project they are signing up for.
We are excited about reading this class novel and seeing the activities and projects that your children will be completing. Their agenda would be a good place to check if you’d like to see what chapters we are covering and what assignments or activities they are working on during the week. Listed below are the projects your child can choose from. Your child does NOT have to have the book read in its entirety in order to complete the project. After you and your child have decided which project would be best for him or her to complete, please have your child return the bottom of the form to his or her Reading teacher by March 27th.
Project Choices:
1. Illustrate and color an event from the novel, and include a short summary of the event. The illustration needs to be on poster board no smaller than 14” X 22” and the summary needs to be written on a 5x8 index card and attached to the back of the illustration.
2. Illustrate and color a new book jacket for your novel. Include a cover illustration and review “blurbs”for the inside flaps. A short biography of the author should be written on the backside. NO notebook paper will be accepted. It needs to be done on computer paper or construction paper. The computer paper and/or construction paper can NOT be cut down to a smaller size.
3. Create a diorama showing a scene from the book. Include a summary of the event. The diorama needs to be three-dimensional and the summary needs to be written on an index card and turned in with the diorama.
4. Draw and color a comic strip showing the conversation between two characters in your novel. The comic strip can be drawn on computer paper or construction paper, but NO notebook paper will be accepted.
5. Pretend you are writing a letter to the author. Include any questions and opinions you may have. This MUST be typed with no larger than 14 pt. font and double-spaced. It needs to be at least TWO pages in length. NO notebook paper will be accepted.
6. Illustrate a collage depicting characters and events from the story. The collage needs to be on poster board no smaller than 14” X 22”. The pictures attached to the collage should fill the entire poster – NO poster board should be visible through the pictures. The pictures can be hand drawn, cut out, and glued on. They can also be cut-outs from a magazine, or print-outs from the computer. It can even have three-dimensional objects attached.
