Stephanie Gilchrest Elementary Teacher
of the Year! Gilchrist began her teaching career at Floresville Early Childhood in 2001.She has taught some of the district’s youngest students as a Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten teacher. Gilchrist said it was her kindergarten teacher that inspired her to become a teacher." The interest and excitement sparked by learning is what I most cherish about my time under Mrs. (Joyce) Baggett’s instruction and what I most desire to pass on to my own students.” |

Mary Ann Ezzell Elementary
Teacher of the Year She said teaching students to be compassionate is essential to their success later in life." We are all here to help others when we can and by showing my students what it looks like to care about others, I am hoping that they in turn will go out and demonstrate the same selflessness,” Ezzell said in her application. “More than just academics, being a truly good person will carry you through in whatever you decide to do with your life.” |

Anne Conn Secondary Teacher of the Year! Conn has worked with students at the FISD Alternative Education Center since 1999.Conn said her time working with students at the alternative center have been her most rewarding years as a teacher. “Ultimately my most rewarding contribution in education is to have been effective in helping my students change their perception about themselves and their abilities,” she explained. “Most of our students have left this campus with a feeling of success and have made achievements that they only used to dream about. What could be more of an accomplishment than that?” |

Juanita Cardenas Primary
Teacher of the Year She began teaching in 1976 and after working in several districts, moved to FISD in 1988. She has spent 18 years in Floresville, where she has taught first and second grade. She also works with the bilingual program. She twice earned recognition as the KWEX Channel 41 Classroom Teacher of the Week. Cardenas said she is successful when her students are successful. “My most significant contribution in education is that I have had success in motivating students to do their best, to attend school, to be good citizens, to feel positive and proud of themselves for trying their best,” she said. |

Charlott McReynolds Middle
School Teacher of the Year McReynolds states that while it is essential for students to learn math, reading and social studies, it is just as important that they learn that teachers care about them because “for some students, a teacher is the only positive role model they may interact with on a daily basis.” “My most significant contribution as a teacher is the relationships that I build with my students. They know I care about them on a personal level,” she explained. “Looking my kids in the eye, saying hello to them, and asking about their family life is what I believe gets them to not only trust me, but want to do well in my class.” |

Mario Perez High School Teacher of the
Year Perez entered the teaching profession after retiring from the military. Perez said that as an educator, his greatest accomplishment has been the numerous students he has taught who have gone on to become contributing members of our society. “I hope that I have convinced a few that you don’t have to be the champion to be successful, and you don’t have to be the richest to be happy,” he said. |

Every fall, the Texas State Teacher of the Year program honors an elementary and a secondary State Teacher of the Year, as well as Regional Teachers of the Year. The selected teachers then become spokespeople for educators, traveling throughout the state giving speeches and presentations while continuing their work in the classroom. A state finalist selection committee will also chose one teacher to be considered for national honors. The President announces the National Teacher of the Year in the spring during a ceremony in the Rose Garden. Nominees in the state and national program are selected based on their performance both in and out of the classroom. Nominees should show a concern for students and the capability to inspire them. He or she should work cooperatively with colleagues and different groups in the community. Nominees should initiate activities that improve instruction for students and have implemented innovations in his or her classroom. The successful nominee should also stay informed about current educational theories and practices and make meaningful contributions to education. |
