Congressman Cuellar accepts applications for nominations to the United States Service Academies each year. Four-year service academies include the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the Coast Guard Academy. These institutions prepare college-age Americans to be commissioned as officers in the active or reserve components of the United States armed services for a minimum of five years upon graduation. The Congressman considers outstanding young men and women from the 28th Congressional District of Texas for acceptance into the academies.
Nominations are made strictly on a competitive basis. As a result, Congressman Cuellar has established an Academy Nominations Selection Committee that determines nominations based solely on the candidate's qualifications. Candidates are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership performance, athletic participation, community service and motivation.
Congressman Cuellar selects those who he considers to be the best choice for this nomination. He stated, “Each year, I only nominate the best and the brightest for our nation’s military academies. These are young men and women who go on to accomplish a great deal for not only themselves but for the American people. Zoe is an excellent student with a bright future. I am honored to announce her acceptance to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. I know she will proudly represent her family, her community and the 28th Congressional District.”
