Congressman Cuellar accepts applications for nominations to the United States Service Academies each year. Four-year service academies include the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the Coast Guard Academy. These institutions prepare college-age Americans to be commissioned as officers in the active or reserve components of the United States armed services for a minimum of five years upon graduation. The Congressman considers outstanding young men and women from the 28th Congressional District of Texas for acceptance into the academies.

Nominations are made strictly on a competitive basis. Candidates are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership performance, athletic participation, community service and motivation.

Congressman Cuellar selects those who he considers to be the best choice for this nomination. He stated, “Each year, I only nominate the best and the brightest for our nation’s military academies. These are young men and women who go on to accomplish a great deal for not only themselves but for the American people. Zoe is an excellent student with a bright future. I am honored to announce her acceptance to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. I know she will proudly represent her family, her community and the 28th Congressional District.”

Zoe Martinez said, “Having desired attendance to this Academy for years, having strived for it for most of my life, and having finally been accepted after much blood, sweat, and tears, I can say without a doubt in my mind and without hesitation in my heart that being accepted into West Point is my greatest accomplishment.”

She continued, “I am beyond grateful to Congressman Cuellar for nominating me and thereby allowing me this opportunity. I am honored to be able to serve our nation and humbled to receive my education from one of the finest institutions in the country. I thank God for the many blessings I have been granted, including that of a loving family and supportive friends, and I look forward to the journey ahead, wherever it may lead.”
