Crews and De La Garza Building Relationships

Mr. Crews, teacher at the Floresville Alternative Center, has spent a life-time teaching students. He has been the Texas Teacher of the Year and presented at national and regional conferences, but what he does best is make a difference for kids. For years, Mr. Crews has taken his personal time to tutor students to help them achieve their goals. Recently, he asked the new Alternative Center Principal, Angela Garcia, if it was okay if he continued to tutor students, in the evening, who were struggling to pass the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test. He explained that he had been doing this for years, as a way to give back to the men and women that are willing to give their lives to serve our country. Mrs. Garcia had this to say about Mr. Crews’ request, “I couldn't help but to be moved to say ‘of course’. All educators start their career with a passion to teach, inspire and support. However, it's not every day that you meet a teacher, that 40-plus years later, has the same passion about teaching as he did when he first started.” About his 47 years of teaching, Mr. Crews says, “I love to share math knowledge and watch when understanding occurs. If you find a job you love to do, you will never work a day of your life. I have found that job and am excited to go to work every day.”

Mrs. De La Garza, a Floresville Middle School teacher, is also building relationships with students. She made the day of some of her students by attending their soccer games. Mrs. De La Garza lives in San Antonio but drove to Floresville to watch students do something they love and were excited to share with her. While this has nothing to do with English, it has everything to do with not only how the students feel about teachers and school but also how they feel about themselves. She said, “I think that having a strong relationship with my students allows me to understand their needs and help them grow academically and as a person.”

FISD is proud of these two teachers, and all the teachers, who are taking the time to build relationships with their students to enhance their school experience. Showing you care about kids and their futures is another way we help prepare our students for prosperous lives.
