Ben Reed, Texas School Social Worker of the Year

On Thursday, February 22, Ben Reed was named 2018’s Texas School Social Worker of the Year at the Texas School Social Workers Conference in Austin.

Ben has been the District Social Worker at Floresville ISD for 16 years and is a department of one. During his tenure, he has developed sustainable programs that assist our families in many ways. You will often hear Ben say, “We are not here to give our families a hand-out, but to give them a leg-up,” and that is how he runs his outreach programs. He provides resources for our families that not only help them in the short-term, but also provide strategies and solutions that change their living circumstances forever.

One of his most inspiring programs is the FISD Parent Advisor Group. They help Ben run the FISD Kid’s Thrift Store/Resource Room, with campus donation drives, the Resource Fair, back-to-school giving, and holiday donations. Through Ben’s efforts, they have become part of the school community. This is possible because Ben builds relationships and creates an environment where all families feel comfortable and valued.

Ben has also proven to be invaluable in crisis situations. His expertise, insight and relationship building skills have helped FISD recover from some unique and difficult times.

In 2015, after a tornado hit Floresville High School, Ben was instrumental in managing thousands of donations from all over the country. Ben organized the donations made not only to our high school, but to our city. His office was a base of recovery for our entire community. He made sure our kids had places to live, he made sure they had clothes, he made sure they had food. He made sure that each family that was impacted got help and could get their kids to school. It was a monumental task that he handled with his usual skill and thoughtfulness.

Ben was also invaluable after the Sutherland Springs shooting in November, 2017. Ben has been an integral part of helping our district and community heal. He spent countless hours with families who were impacted by the shooting. He has problem-solved, counseled, organized and provided hope to our school family and community.

Ben does all of these things while also providing on-going behavioral counseling to some of our most at-risk students.

FISD is proud to have 2018’s best Social Worker helping our district, students and families!
