Debbie Akers came to Floresville ISD to serve as the Director of Special Education and District Testing Coordinator after holding the position of principal at Poteet High School for the past five years. Ms. Akers began her journey to becoming an educator by graduating from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She flourished as a classroom teacher where she taught kindergarten, first grade and third grade for a total of 14 years. Upon completion of her Master’s degree from Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 2005, where she majored in special education/educational diagnostician, she secured a position as an instructional specialist. In January of 2008, she took a position as assistant principal at a 4th and 5th grade campus, where she completed certification as an administrator through participation in the Education Service Center, Region XX program called Cohort of Leadership Associates. She led the campus in Positive Behavior Support and ultimately became the campus principal in 2009. After her first successful year at a recognized school, she was promoted to leading the elementary campus which contained over 600 students.
Ms. Akers has two children. A daughter who recently graduated from Texas A&M-College Station majoring in landscape architecture/horticulture. Her son is majoring in finance at Texas Tech University. They enjoy spending time together and take an annual trip to the snow each winter.
