Attendance
What Can Be Excused?
Examples of reasons that may qualify for an excused absence with appropriate documentation include:
Personal illness: A parent or guardian note may excuse up to 10 days of personal illness. After that limit, a doctor’s note is required.
Medical appointments or documented illness: Provide documentation from the physician or medical provider.
A family member’s funeral: Provide documentation of the funeral.
Required court appearances: Provide official court documentation.
Other qualifying reasons: Certain religious observances, citizenship activities, military family circumstances, and other reasons covered by state law may qualify. Contact your campus about documentation requirements.
These examples are not a complete list. Please review Section 2 of the FISD Student Handbook for additional requirements. Excused absences are at the digression of the campus principal.
What Makes an Absence Unexcused?
An absence may remain unexcused when:
No note or required documentation is submitted.
The explanation does not qualify for an excused absence under district procedures or state law. Reasons that may be considered unexcused include:
Family vacations or trips for recreation.
Oversleeping or missing school because the student was not ready on time.
Shopping, running errands, or other personal business.
Staying home to celebrate a birthday or another personal occasion.
Participating in an activity that has not been approved by the school.
Missing the bus or not having transportation arranged.
Family emergencies that do not qualify as excused.
The 10-day parent-note limit for personal illness has been reached and no doctor’s note is provided.
A parent’s permission to miss school does not automatically make an absence excused. The campus reviews the reason and documentation before determining how to record it.
What About Tardies and Early Checkouts?
Documentation requirements also apply when your child arrives late or leaves early.
Students arriving late must check in before going to class.
Students leaving early must follow campus sign-out procedures.
Submit documentation explaining the missed time.
Students must complete missed work.
Attendance Notifications
FISD sends automated phone calls and text messages when a student is marked absent. Attendance texts or emails include a link to submit an absence note.
Please keep your phone number and email address current with your child’s campus. If you believe an absence was recorded incorrectly, contact the campus attendance office.
Need Help?
Contact your campus attendance office with questions about notes, documentation, or your child’s attendance record. If your family is facing a challenge that affects attendance, we want to work with you to help.
