A Bit of History about Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Through CTE, students in FISD have the opportunity to enroll in programs of study that consist of over 60 different CTE courses arranged within 9 Career Clusters designed to meet the ever changing demands of our regional, state and global workforce.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) can trace it roots back over 200 years and more to our country's rich heritage of apprenticeship training. Later, formal occupational education programs were established by the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 providing federal funding and guidelines for program design and accountability. Even in its infancy, CTE has always met the academic and technical training needs essential to build a strong, educated, skilled nation.

Since the 1960's with the implementation of the Carl D. Perkins Act of 1963, Career and Technical Education has evolved dramatically. Not only have we experienced name changes (from Vocational Education prior to the 1960's, to Vocational Technical Education through the 1980's, to Career and Technology Education (CATE) in the early '90's, to Career and Technical Education (CTE) in 2006); CTE has had a constant shift in focus and rigor.  The consistent evolution of our CTE programs is critical to meet the increasing demands for academic rigor, integration, and to prepare each and every student for success in an ever evolving, demanding global workforce.

In FISD, our CTE teachers and programs strive to remain on the forefront of technological education, academic integration, service to the community, personal growth, and college and career readiness.

FISD is committed to developing 21st century graduates who are life-long learners that are

purposeful, innovative, collaborative, and possess character traits that lead to success. The CTE Department is helping to prepare students NOW for jobs that haven’t even been created! We are FUTURE READY!
