Bilingual/ESL

Floresville ISD offers the following language programs for ELs: One-Way Dual Language Program, and ESL Programs (Content-Based and Pull-Out ESL Programming). Most importantly, we strive to not only support students as they acquire English as a second language but also honor and welcome each student’s culture and first language as a means of transitioning to learning academic content in the English language.

Goals of Bilingual and ESL Education
The goal of the bilingual education program is to help Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) master the state curriculum and teach English to all participating students.  We do this through explicit instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in all academic areas. The goal of the ESL program is to develop English language proficiency using second language methodology through explicit instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in all academic areas.

Program Eligibility
School districts in Texas are required by state law to assess the English language proficiency of all students whose Home Language Survey indicates that the home language is a language other than English.

If a child demonstrates limited English proficiency on the assessment, s/he will be eligible for enrollment in the appropriate language program: bilingual education or English as a Second Language (ESL). Bilingual education programs serve students who have a language other than English in their homes and need help learning English.  The goal of the ESL program is to enable English language learners to become competent in the understanding, reading, listening, speaking, and writing of the English language through the development of literacy and academic skills in grade level content areas.

Dual Language One-Way
Dual Language refers to a program that provides literacy and content instruction to participating students in two languages, promoting bilingualism, biliteracy, and social-cultural competence in a rich academic setting.

A One-Way Dual Language Spanish Immersion Program is a developmental bilingual program integrating Emergent Bilingual students in two program languages, English and Spanish. The primary focus of this model is to develop the English language while continuing to develop their skills in Spanish.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program
English as a Second Language (ESL) is an intensive instructional program designed to develop proficiency in the comprehension, listening, speaking, reading, and writing of the English language. Student eligibility for the program is determined through the administration of an English language proficiency test, and parent permission is required for entrance into the program. All instruction is provided in English and utilizes the TEKS and the ELPS for the cultivation of English language skills and the promotion of academic success in all grade level content areas. ESL is an intensive English language instruction program provided by ESL certified teachers who are trained in effective second language acquisition methods.
